It seems in the UK we are a nation obsessed with gadgets and mobile devices, using smartphones and tablets to access the internet more heavily than any of the world’s leading economies, according to new research. The UK has now even overtaken Japan on mobile internet use. This is mostly thanks to the use of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
In the same report, it suggests that in the UK we are among the most likely to make internet purchases from their smartphones, with more than 23% having visited an e-commerce website, the highest in Europe.
The importance of having a mobile and tablet friendly ‘responsive’ website has never been greater. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to look at a website designed solely for the desktop on a small 3 inch screen, ‘pinching’ and ‘pulling’ to try and read the page links.
With a responsive site, the layout can be designed in such a way that the width of the pages and number of columns can adjust based on the screen size you are using. Font sizes and images adjust accordingly, vastly improving the user experience.
